My name is Ron Standerfer, Founder and Publisher of The Pelican Communications Group. You can read my biography if you care to by going to My Biography; but first, let me explain in my own words why I formed the company.
Seven years ago I wrote a historical novel that I was unable to publish the traditional way. It was the same old story: No mentor = no literary agent = no publisher. Eventually, I put my book in the hands of a large, well-known, self-publishing firm. What followed, was five frustrating years during which the cost of publishing my book raised enormously and, despite all the promotional bells and whistles I paid for, its modest sales (about 800 copies) were the result of my efforts, not the publisher’s. That’s when I decided to become an independent author.
It didn’t take me long to figure out that if I became an independent publisher as well, I could help writers avoid the frustration and expense I endured. Hence, I formed The Pelican Communications Group, whose publication system is based on three simple principles that I learned the hard way:
- The path from manuscript submission to publication is uniformly focused on the basic tasks of editing, proof reading, cover selection, back cover creation, and pre-publication formatting. My theory is that by choosing manuscripts written by authors who know how to write, it will not be necessary to offer costly and time consuming options like content editing and line editing.
- Each author is assigned an editor to work with until the book is published. This not only personalizes the system, but encourages dialogues concerning author preferences and artistic issues.
- While less is usually more, the opposite is sometimes true. That’s why I chose Amazon, the leader in our industry, to print our books, market them worldwide, and function as our online store for billing and shipping. This gives us the capability to publish on both Kindle and Create Space which in turn, gives our authors the opportunity to sell their books in both the paper back and e-book markets.
In summary, The Pelican Communications Group will grow, as most startup companies do; but I will never allow it to outpace the dreams and expectations of our authors, because they come first.
